Contemporary Tradition

As I came to the end of this collection I starting thinking more about crochet and how the traditional granny square is always a fundamental part of crochet. I wanted to make a piece that honoured the square but also add my own contemporary twist. For this I chose to do one large square but then add to it with gold leaf to give the effect of smaller squares across the piece to give hints of a traditional granny square blanket. I then distressed the gold leaf to give its fragmented appearance and give the contemporary edge. The choice to position it as a diamond rather than a square creates a more dynamic piece compared to the traditional square
